UMaine cooperative extension holds free garden workshop

STILLWATER, ME – University of Maine Cooperative Extension will hold a free garden tour workshop titled, “Extend the Gardening Season with Raised Beds and Container Gardens”, at Rogers Farm on Tuesday, May 24 at 6pm on the Bennoch Road in Stillwater.

Get a jump start on gardening this spring and harvest crops well after the snow flies this fall by learning how to use raised beds and container gardens to extend the gardening season.  University of Maine Cooperative Extension Horticulturist, Kate Garland and Master Gardener Volunteers will demonstrate how to build a raised bed with special features that help extend the growing season.  Garland will discuss raised bed construction, crop selection, and strategies for managing temperature during the early and late parts of the traditional growing season.  Master Gardeners will construct a raised bed during the workshop and a demonstration of a straw bale cold frame will also be shared.

Tips for those attending UMaine commencement

ORONO - The University of Maine's 209th commencement, scheduled for Saturday May 7, will fill Alfond Arena with graduates and spectators for each of its two sessions.  One of Maine's largest single-day, indoor annual events, UMaine commencement celebrates the accomplishments of those graduating from Maine's flagship university.

Traffic will be exceptionally heavy, especially coming from the south.  Those traveling to Orono for either session are asked to allow a good deal of extra time and plan on arriving early.  Doors will open at 8 a.m.

Backpacks and strollers are not allowed in Alfond Arena, according to UMaine police.  The commencement floor level is not accessible by spectators for any purpose, including photos.

Giggey Girl Gowns Has Changed My Life...2

When I first started the "Giggey Girl Gowns" Dress Donation Center, I never thought that it would be something big (but man did I hope). Today, I am proud to announce that we have given away 3 dresses! (A pair of shoes and a shawl as well!) Three very deserving girls have come to get dresses from us, and have had a wonderful time with it! As have I! I never thought that I would have so much watching girls try on dresses, but I really did! I don't think I have ever smiled that much in my life!

I also have a VERY HUGE announcement today. When we first started Giggey Girl Gowns, my mom set what I thought was an outrageous goal: collect 100 dresses. I thought that she was crazy, and decided not to share it publicly. Last time I had a news interview, we were at 85 dresses, and I publicly announced our goal for the first time. Today I am more the pround to announce that we reached this goal.
