News

ORONO - The University of Maine women's basketball team (2-21, 1-9 America East) dropped an 86-54 decision to visiting Albany (20-3, 11-0 AE). Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) paced the Maine attack with 20 points and five rebounds while Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) chipped in eight points and eight rebounds and Brittany Wells (Indianapolis, In.) added nine points.

The Black Bears went 21-for-58 from the field (36.2%) and 8-for-13 from the free throw line (61.5%). Julie Forster led Albany with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

With the Great Danes leading by five with just over 13-minutes remaining in the opening half, the Black Bears went on a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the ballgame. Courtney Anderson (Greene, Maine) started the run by finding Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) for two. Roberts would draw a foul on the make and, following a made free throw, and an Albany hoop, Anderson connected with Roberts again, this time for three. Maine kept the pressure on as Roberts kicked a pass out to the right wing where Brittany Wells (Indianapolis, In.) knocked down a three to give the Black Bears a two point lead, 18-16, with 10:45 to play in the opening half.

The Great Danes tied things once again before a Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) jumper regained a two point edge for Maine.

Albany ended the first half on a 20-6 run to take a 40-24 lead at the half.

Wood tallied six points and seven rebounds in the opening half to lead Maine while Roberts also added six points.

The Great Danes ran its lead to 25 early in the second half before the Black Bears answered with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 19. Roberts started the streak with a pair of free throws before Wells knocked down a jumper. Wells followed her make with a steal before racing down the floor for a layup to bring Maine within 19.

A 13-4 Albany run gave the Great Danes a 29 points advantage with 8:17 to play in the half.

Maine kept fighting as back-to-back layups from Roberts and a free throw from Mikaela Gustafsson (Sodertalje, Sweden) late cut the Great Dane lead by five. However Albany ended the game on a 6-0, sealing the contest 86-54.

The Black Bears return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13 with a 7 PM contest on ESPN3 at Hartford.
