Maine Discovery Museum's Gala Dinner Auction is "Outta Sight!"

Maine Discovery Museum’s 8th annual benefit auction features New-England made oak storage bins that have been transformed into elegant, whimsical, and utterly original works of art.  Every year, artists from across the state of Maine donate their time and amazing talents to help the children’s museum raise money for scholarships and the museum’s annual fund.

Pine Kneedlers Are Knitting Teddies Again

Pine Kneedlers, the Bangor knitting guild, is offering a one-day teddy bear workshop on Saturday, November 13th to create nine-inch, multi-color, multi-pattern teddies. This is a great way to use up all that leftover yarn you don’t know what to do with. The workshop is only $20 for guild members ($30 for nonmembers) and includes the workshop (9:00am-4:30pm), all the handouts, catered lunch, and afternoon tea and treats in the historic atmosphere of the Charles Inn in downtown Bangor. Participants will create at least one teddy to enjoy or give away as a gift.

TRUNK OR TREAT.    SAFE, FUN, FREE.     IT’S ROCKTOBERFEST AT THE ROCK!
 
The parking lots of both the Brewer and Bangor campuses of the The Rock Church will be transformed into fantasy villages full of free candy Sunday, October 31, 2010 from 5PM to 7PM. The public is invited and encouraged to attend, as decorated vehicles with trunks full of candy will be ready and waiting for kids of all ages. An ‘80s rock band, a pirate ship and myriad fun theme cars will be hosting this safe, free event a sponsored by the Rock and located in Bangor at 1195 Ohio Street, and the Brewer Campus, 391 N. Main Street, Brewer.

(Westbrook) – On Thursday, October 28, at Penobscot County Federal Credit Union in Old Town, representatives from Maine’s credit unions will join Brenda Davis, Executive Director of Cross Roads Ministries, an Old Town-based hunger agency that serves thousands in Eastern Maine, at a pre-walk celebration for the Ninth Annual Maine Credit Unions’ Ending Hunger Walking Tour.

Christmas Comes Early To Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church

Are you looking for a great gift for family and friends? Stop by Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church at 44 Kennebec Road on Saturday, November 20 for its annual Christmas Fair. The Christmas Fair will be open from 8 am to 2 pm .      
The organization for the Christmas Fair begins in late summer and early fall.  Since September, several members have met to create crafts. This year’s fair features crafts, ornaments, fanci-work, and wreath making. It also includes baked goods, cheese, jams, jellies, and garden vegetables. Members have been busy organizing the silent auction. Gift certificates make great gifts. There will be a children’s shop. All items will be $1 or less. The shop opens at 8 am for children to shop for family members and to all other shoppers at 12 noon .

ACCLAIMED NOVELIST MADDEN TO VISIT UMAINE NOV. 1

Prolific and acclaimed writer David Madden will spend the day at the University of Maine on Monday, Nov. 1.   Louisiana State University's Robert Penn Warren Professor of Creative Writing, emeritus, Madden will visit with UMaine English
students and faculty members to share his insights and expertise on writing.  At 4 p.m., the University of Maine bookstore will host him for a reading and book signing.

Madden's new novel, "Abducted by Circumstance," is his tenth.  He was a Pulitzer Prize nominee for his 1978 novel, "The Suicide's Wife," a story that also became a television movie.  Arguably one of the most prolific writers in contemporary literature, Madden has produced numerous short stories, poems, essays, textbooks and scholarly works -- in addition to his novels -- in a career that has spanned more than 50 years.

On Thursday, October 21, 2010, there will be a screening of Flatland: The Movie, based on the celebrated novel, starring Kristen Bell (Heroes, Veronica Mars, When in Rome) and Martin Sheen. Jeffrey Travis, who directed the film, and visiting professor Tony Harkin, a consultant for the film, will discuss it afterwards. The event goes from 5 to 7 p.m.
