Fitness centers host “free” open-house day to benefit Brewer Parks & Rec camp program

BREWER – Bangor-Brewer Athletic Club will host a free family fun day at the gym featuring six new exercise classes, a kid’s obstacle course, adult workout challenges, plus a variety of family-fun activities like face painting and a dunk tank, on Saturday, July 9, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its 34 Abbott St. fitness center (the former J.J.Nissen Bakery) in Brewer.

Team Irish MMA Fitness Academy is also participating in the open house fitness day, which is being held to raise money for the Brewer Parks & Rec Department day camp program.

Weather permitting, fitness classes will be held outdoors, and there will be a variety of demonstrations, prizes, and healthy treats for all.

“We are committed to this area and helping keep its residents fit, active, and healthy,” said Wendy Watkins, of BBAC. “The camp program does a great job keeping kids moving, and with our growing childhood obesity epidemic, we think that’s a very important program to support.”

Mark’s Music of Brewer is donating a sound system for the event.

“We want to show people that fitness can be fun,” said Watkins. “It’s hard enough for people to find time for a fitness program, and we’ve always held the belief that if it isn’t fun, people won’t do it. Now more than ever, people need to exercise. We hope that so many people show up for the classes on July 9, we have to add more to our lineup that day.”

The gym’s free offerings that day include Zumba, BodyPump, BodyStep, BodyFlow, BodyCombat, and BodyVive.
