Hampden Trails Grand Opening 5-K Fun Run & Walk
Events
A 5-K Fun Run and Walk will mark the grand opening celebration of Hampden’s newest recreational trail system, the Reeds Brook Trails, at noon on Sunday, October 19, 2014. “This will be the first public event for our trails, the result of a five-year-long project involving the school district, the town of Hampden, the Penobscot Valley Ski Club, Hampden Academy Athletic Boosters, Maine Winter Sports Center, and local Boy Scouts,” said Dustin Ramsay, who worked extensively on development of the trails. “We hope it will be used by the greater Bangor community for walking, running, biking, and Nordic skiing. It’s basically set-up for four-season, non-motorized use.” The original trail plan, which includes expansion plans for the future, was designed by Fred Bailey Trail Designs, with a majority of the forestry work by Ground Perfection Specialists, a local firm specializing in eco-friendly mulched trail ways. Ryan Cole, a Hampden Academy senior, led construction of a wooden bridge spanning Reeds Brook as part of his Eagle Scout project. “The trails are the result of hundreds of volunteer hours, many of them during community trail work days held this past summer,” Ramsay said. The 5-K Fun Run and Walk is sponsored by the RSU #22 Education Foundation and will wind through the 1.6-mile trail system, with start and finish at the trailhead behind Reeds Brook Middle School on Main Road South in Hampden. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with a noon time race start. Pre-registration is available via mail at www.sub5.com, or online registration at www.rbtrails@racewire.com. Prizes donated by local businesses, such as the Coffee Break, Pizza Gourmet, Hampden Floral, Scissor Excitement, and Anglers Restaurant, will be awarded to first finishers in each of five categories, from elementary school aged children to adults.
