Winter Camping for Youth in Piscataquis County
Winter Camping for Youth in Piscataquis County

What were you doing on our recent "summer" weekend March 16th-18th?  An active group of Piscataquis youth were out camping!  Alexandra and Kermit Bennett (with Maine Audubon) and Sam Cole and Stephen Madera (with the Charlotte White Center) were the trip leaders for this great event!

10 Piscataquis youth trekked out to have a winter camping trip, that ended up being a wee bit warmer than expected.  "You wouldn't believe how much heat those little stoves put off in our canvas tent" reported a surprised Sam Cole.  The 10 youth and 4 leaders spent the weekend in canvas tents with tiny wood stoves for heat.  Even though it rained a couple of mornings of the trip, it didn't dampen any spirits!  The highlight of the trip was ice fishing with retired game warden Don Annis and his son Glenn Annis, game warden as well.  Several good size brook trout were caught, with the biggest being 17"!  The catch proved a yummy dinner that evening over the camp fire.

There were also involved in a scavenger hunt that had evidence of leprechauns----it being St. Paddy's Day and all!

"This event was partially paid for by donors who are passionate about youth and outdoor recreation.  Several of these kids would not have had this experience otherwise.  We are grateful for the support." said Erica Lewis, Development Director for the Charlotte White Center.
