Big Brothers Big Sisters Makes 'Bowl for Kids Sake' Appeal

(Bangor) Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine is looking for businesses, organizations and individuals in Penobscot County to support and participate in its annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake event.  The event will take place at Bangor-Brewer Bowling Lanes in Brewer (May 10, 13, 15); Family Fun Lanes in Bangor (May 11, 14, 18); and Old Town Bowling Center in Old Town (May 17).

The event will raise funds to support Big & Little matches in Penobscot County.  The goal is to have more than 100 teams and 400+ bowlers participate.  Event Coordinator Chris Olsen says, “You don’t have to be a great, or even good bowler – you just need to want to support Big Brothers Big Sisters.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine is one of almost 400 agencies across the nation that provides 1-to-1 youth mentoring services for children ages 5-14 facing adversity.  They help these children by establishing a stable, positive relationship through matches with a high-school or college student, or a caring adult (Bigs).  The mentors provide support, guidance and encouragement for their Littles, while Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine nurtures each match with training, activities and professional support.  The Bowl For Kids’ Sake event is the agency’s largest fundraiser of the year, generating approximately 35% of the agency’s operating costs.

“We challenge everyone – business and community leaders, service clubs, public safety organizations, town councilors and selectmen, individuals and their friends, families and neighbors, as well as others who may not have time to mentor a child but would like to support Big Brothers Big Sisters mission – to join Bowl For Kids’ Sake and start something to change the life of a child forever,” says BBBSMCM’s CEO Alex Gaeth. “Bowl For Kids’ Sake brings the whole community together in support of a positive future for our kids.  No matter how someone chooses to be involved, as a bowler, team captain, or sponsor, each person has a hand in helping to start a child on the right path.  Every dollar raised through Bowl for Kids’ Sake directly funds our mentoring programs in Knox, Lincoln, Waldo and Penobscot Counties and helps to maintain and sustain our mentoring relationships, increasing kids’ chances for success.”

Local businesses can support the event by becoming event and lane sponsors and encouraging their employees to participate as Team Captains and team members.  Teams can select the date, location and time they wish to bowl.  Bowlers then raise money by soliciting pledges from people they know.  Each bowler is encouraged to raise a minimum of $50 in pledges, and those who raise $100 or more are entered in raffle drawings to win prizes.  Trophies will also be given to top fundraising teams and individuals, and all bowlers will receive a Bowl For Kids’ Sake t-shirt.

To take part in this year’s event, call Chris Olsen at 745-1287 or email him at  to receive the necessary forms to form a team and start collecting pledges.  Businesses wishing to sponsor the event and volunteers who would like to help out on the bowling dates are also encouraged to call for more information.
