Third annual Hancock County Food Drive kicks off March 1

The Third Annual Hancock County Food Drive kicks off March 1 and it couldn’t happen at a better time. More than 44 percent of Hancock County children qualified for reduced school lunches in 2013 but hunger doesn’t go away at the end of the school day.  Those children often go to bed hungry and spend the weekend that way. Fifteen percent of all Maine households lack access to nutritious food.  During the winter that number goes even higher as Mainers struggle to pay for heating their homes. The prolonged periods of frigid temperatures, rising fuel prices and the number of storms have combined to make it even more difficult this year. That creates an extra strain on local food pantries and community meal sites which have seen their numbers swell in recent months.

The Hancock County Food Drive runs the entire month of March. This year’s goal is 15,000 items. There is an added bonus. The Maine Community Foundation and United Way of Eastern Maine have once again pledged a one dollar match for every food item donated up to $10,000 dollars. All the food and money will be divided between the food pantries and community meal sites. You can help by making a monetary donation at www.unitedwayem.org and click on the “Donate Now” button. Checks can be made out to United Way of Eastern Maine with Hancock Food Drive on the memo line. They should be sent to 24 Springer Drive suite 201 Bangor, Maine 04401. Donations of food can be dropped off at sites all over Hancock County. For more information please call Marjorie at 667-8112.

*There will be a kickoff event at Friends and Family Market on route 3 in Ellsworth on Saturday March 1.  WNSX will be doing a live remote will from 10:00-1:00. Members of the media are invited to come by and cover this event. We will be gathering food at that time. Volunteers and Food Pantry Staff will be on hand to talk about the need. If you are interested in covering the event or there is anything we can provide that will make coverage easier please contact Susan Farley at  610-5925 or at 598-5654 the day of the event.
