BANGOR – Hollywood Slots Hotel & Raceway is partnering with Eastern Maine Community College to participate in an innovative new program at the college. EMCC’s Maine Hospitality Institute will provide students with associate degree options in culinary arts and the recently approved hospitality and tourism management, in addition to short term, training in all facets of the hospitality industry.

Hollywood Slots’ partnership involves the forthcoming addition of table games to the Bangor facility. EMCC is developing a short-term training program that will train students on the skill sets necessary for jobs at casino gaming operations.

“The jobs that people will be training for will be in addition to about 400 other employees who are currently working at Hollywood Slots in downtown Bangor,” said John Osborne, General Manager of Hollywood Slots Hotel & Raceway. “We will see table games added to our facility within the next few months and we look forward to starting the process to bring in additional staff to prepare for our new entertainment offerings.”

“This program is just the beginning of what we can offer through EMCC and the Hospitality Institute,” said Eastern Maine Community College President Lawrence Barrett. “It’s an example of the ‘3 e’s’: economic development and education leading to employment here in the region.”

EMCC officials say the creation of the Maine Hospitality Institute was in response to calls from local business leaders in the hospitality industry expressing their need for well-trained and creative employees. Training related to casino gaming is expected to begin in January, and will take place under the grandstand at Bangor Raceway.

Hollywood Slots Hotel & Raceway is also planning a job fair to take place from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., this Friday and Saturday, December 16 – 17, at Eastern Maine Community College’s Rangeley Hall, 268 Sylvan Road in Bangor.  The job fair will include information on table games, as well as other career opportunities at Hollywood Slots Hotel & Raceway.

“The Maine work force is among the best in the country,” said Osborne. “They give it their all.”
