A Home for the Holidays

The Bangor Humane Society is urging us all to consider adopting a pet instead of purchasing a new pet this holiday season.

The holidays are a popular time of year for bringing new pets into the home and many people tend to purchase pets as gifts this time of year. The Bangor Humane Society is reaching out to remind us all that an adopted pet is a better option to purchasing a pet from a pet store. As our economy worsens, many individuals and families have been forced to put their beloved pets up for adoption due to loss of income, downsizing their homes, and relocating to new locations to find work. The Bangor Humane Society has lots of pets in need of a good home and wants to remind us all of the benefits associated with choosing to adopt a pet.

Adopting a pet provides numerous benefits, not only to the pet being rescued and the facility they are rescued from, but also to the individual of family that chooses adoption over a pet store purchase. "The positive health and social benefits of adopting a pet are numerous," notes Stacey Coventry, Public Relations Manager, "there is no greater feeling than rescuing an animal in need."

Adopting a pet means you are giving a second a chance, and often you are saving a life. The agency hopes to find homes for their adoptable pets before they succumb to illness from shelter stress.

Adoption is relatively inexpensive, compared to purchasing from a pet store and you'll save on spaying or neutering and the cost of vaccinations. Not only will you save money, but you'll have peace of mind knowing the adopted animal has passed the agency’s behavioral and medical evaluations.

In an effort to increase pet adoptions this holiday season, the agency is offering holiday promotions on pet adoption fees all month long. Adult cats 6 months and older are fee waived until Monday Dec. 12th. Then they will be 50% off. Additionally, if you adopt a dog this month from the Bangor Humane Society, you will receive 50% off a six week session of obedience classes at Bear Brook Kennels. Obedience is a great way to build a trusted bond between you and your new adopted dog.

While the shelter is offering holiday discounts, it strongly encourages individuals considering adoption to make sure  they choose a pet that matches their lifestyle, but also that they or the gift recipient can afford the ongoing shelter, food, veterinary care, and other needs that a new pet requires.

This holiday season, The Bangor Humane Society wants anyone considering a pet to consider giving the gift of a second chance by choosing adoption.

Additionally, while it is the agency’s wish that all their shelter pets will find a home for the holidays, the reality is many will spend the holiday season in care of the Bangor Humane Society. If you are not in a position to adopt, the agency has decorated their holiday tree with ornaments that list items from their wish list. Simply, take an ornament and return the item listed under the tree to help give their animals a warmer and more joyous holiday season while they await their new forever home. The agency also welcomes monetary donations to help offset the cost of the discounted adoption fees that will go towards the direct care of the animals in the shelter.

Story Side:

A great example of the difference that pet adoption can make is illustrated with Tequila’s story.

In 2008, Tequila, a seven year old pitbull, was surrendered to the shelter because her owners could no longer care for her financially. She spent one month at the shelter before being adopted. Two years later, Tequila, now a 9 year old senior dog, found herself back at the shelter because her owner was unable to provide care for her. During the 2010 holiday season, Tequila was adopted once again, finally finding her forever home.
