Charlotte White Center Gets Kids Ready for School

The Charlotte White Center has just completed its 2012 School Store program!  Another year of getting kids in greater Bangor and Dover-Foxcroft communities ready for school.  This year we served a total of 245 children. With the help of approximately 40 volunteers working a total of 150 hours-----now that's community service!

The goal of the School Store program is not just to get school supplies to children who need them, but to teach children life skills and the value of community service.  By performing good deeds and community service, children have the opportunity to earn items they need and want.   Two weeks before the store opens, each child is given a CWC “checkbook” containing deposit slips that total $10.00. Children earn deposits by doing good deeds for family, friends or community members.  A parent or caregiver fills out the slip each time the child is “caught” doing a good deed. Once at the store, the child redeems the deposit slips and shops from a wide variety of school supply items.  Merchandise is priced so each shopper is able to obtain most of their needed supplies with the $10.00.  Additionally, each child may choose 4 items of clothing from the store.  The clothes offered include a variety of new items.

Children are given the opportunity to earn more “CWC cash” through community service.  Each child can bring in a non-perishable food item, which is then donated to a local food cupboard.  Children who choose to do this earn an extra $1.00.  This year over 150 items of food were donated to local food cupboards.

This program is fully funded through donations and grants.  Thank you to our funders for this year's store:
