Old Town Takes Top Spot for 5th Year

The Old Town Concert Band came in just 41 votes ahead of the Brewer High School Jazz Ensemble to win first place in the Bangor Area Breakfast Rotary All That Jazz competition. 

The event showcased the talents of musicians from four area high schools.  In addition to Bangor and Brewer High Schools, Hampden Academy's Voices Unlimited and the Bangor High School Concert Band performed for a crowd of nearly 750 Thursday evening.  Each school will receive $1 thousand for competing, and the Old Town Concert Band will get an additional $2 thousand for it's first place finish.

The BangorArea Breakfast Rotary Club gives each participating school 200 tickets to sell for the event.  A ticket is the chance to vote for the best band, and Old Town had the most votes.  It was the school's fifth straight year with top honors.

Annual Maine History Day Competition to Commence in Augusta

250 students will compete for the opportunity to travel to the
National Competition in Maryland

AUGUSTA – On Wednesday, March 23 the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) will host 250 students from across the state as they take part in Maine History Day, an annual educational competition for all Maine students in grades 6 through 12.  An award ceremony will be held at 2:00 pm in Jewett Hall at UMA.

Maine History Day is part of a nationwide program involving all 50 states and the District of Columbia.  Maine State winners may take part in the national competition at the University of Maryland in June.

STONINGTON, MAINE—The National Theater of the United States of America brings their hit show, “Chautauqua!” to the Stonington Opera House for its only Maine performance on Wednesday, April 6 at 7 p.m. The New Yorker has called “Chautauqua!”
“... a timely, beautiful meditation on the relationship between the arts, urbanity, community and economics.”

This very special appearance will feature Maine journalist Colin Woodard (The Lobster Coast) as guest speaker and community members as part of the grand finale; and is made possible thanks to the generous support of the New England Foundation for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Outdoor Market Extends Dates for Summer 2011; Seeking Vendors Turn Your Creativity into Cash!

BANGOR, ME- Bangor Center Corporation announces the 6th annual Outdoor Market.  Based on the success of previous years the market has extended from eight to ten weeks.  The market, located along Broad Street and in West Market Square, will be held Thursdays June 9th-August 11th from 5:00 PM- 8:00 PM.  It will be held in conjunction with the Cool Sounds free concert series from 6:00 PM- 7:30 PM on the same dates.

All items sold must be handmade, prepared or raised by the vendor; emphasis is placed on Maine-made, specialty food items and produce. Past vendors have sold baked goods, candy, furniture, handbags, jams, jewelry, photography, soap, toys and much more. Food vendors are also invited to sign up as vendors.
