Hampden tables repeal of comprehensive plan

HAMPDEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- After a three hour discussion, Hampden Town Council members have decided to table the request to repeal the 2010 Comprehensive Plan.

The Community Room in the Municipal Building in Hampden was filled with people who wanted to repeal a plan that they think violates their individual property rights.  Council members say the plan is a way for the town to take inventory on land resources.  Rich Armstrong, a lifelong resident of Hampden, is the one who requested the repeal.  He wants the citizens and council members to listen to each other better than they have in the past.

"Planning is a great thing, but we all have to be involved in it," Armstrong said. "If if affects any one of us we've got to shut that TV off, get to this meeting, and give you our input so we can make it right for our vision of the future as well as yours."

Intense weather makes a big mess

GLENBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Monday's wet weather led to some downed power lines, fallen trees, and flooded roads.

Lakeside Landing Road in Glenburn flooded and crews were called in to push back snow banks so water could drain. Alan Adams of the Glenburn Fire Department says the biggest concern is making sure people have access to their homes and emergency personnel can get through. He says with storms like this, you have to be aware and be flexible.

"There's really not any preparation, just springtime in Maine. Mud, rain water, it's what you deal with," Lt. Alan Adams, Glenburn Fire Department, said.

Crews also had to clear up a section of the Hudson Road where a tree had fallen in to one lane of traffic. Adams says people just need to be aware when driving in these conditions.

Spring conservation projects encouraged

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- While some communities are looking into pay as you throw trash programs, the Penobscot County Soil and Water Conservation District is encouraging home conservation projects this spring.

District manager Chris Brewer says purchasing a recycled rain barrel, a compost bin or even buying from their tree and shrub sale can help with conservation. Their website has several items listed under backyard conservation to view. Brewer says even small contributions can make a big difference in the environment.

Brewer says, " A rain barrel can store up to 1300 gallons of water a year which you wont have to take for your well or a public water supply that just came from the sky. And so you reduce that kind of energy usage. And composting reduces several hundreds of pounds of waste in your trash stream. "
