Eastern Maine's best sandwich is...

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- What makes a good sandwich? Today at the Bangor Hilton Garden Inn, 17 restaurants and cafes got to show off what they think is the best sandwich in Eastern Maine.

Sandwiches ranged from the classic lobster roll, to a grilled ahi tuna sandwich and a blackened pulled pork sandwich with macaroni and cheese!  The sandwiches were judged on creativity, flavor, and presentation, and the judges were hoping to be surprised too.

"Something that we haven't necessecarily seen before all the time. It's something that has a nice flavor profile, a new spin on an old favorite maybe," judges Melanie Brookes and Emily Burnham said.

The winning sandwich was a roast pork loin with pickled apples and shallots made by culinary students at the United Techonolgy Center in Bangor.

One road reopens after train derailment

OLD TOWN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Part of French Island is now reopened after several cars derailed just before 11:00 Tuesday morning.

The thirty-three car train derailed in two places, effectively blocking off all three roads leading to the residential section of the island for about three hours.

In one section, two green boxcars partially tipped over. The second derailment was on a bridge connecting the rail from old town to the island. There a boxcar -- which sat between six cars holding liquid propane -- had also derailed.

Old Town fire officials said as many as 18 cars may have been affected by the derailment.

"I've always thought about how it would be inconvenient to have one stop there, but derailing is even worse," said French Island resident Seth Warren.

Police arrest woman for shoplifting, she turns violent

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Police say a woman who was stopped for trying to steal more than $860 dollars worth of merchandise from Sears became violent on arrest.

Last Saturday, the security team at the Bangor Mall called the Bangor Police Department.  Security officers told police they had caught Melissa Lacasse, of Old Town, rolling a shopping cart full of items out of the Sears without paying for them.

The items in the cart totalled $863.80.

The police officers spoke with Lacasse and determined she'd have to go to jail. That's when she became violent.

The officers restrained her as she became physically combative.  Lacasse spat on them.

After being finally detained, police found a Klonopin on her person. That's a drug used to treat epilepsy and anxiety.

Lacasse faces charges resulting from the theft, the assault and the pill found on her.

Property owner is given one last chance

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Bangor City Council is giving a resident one more chance to salvage his property even though he's had 11 years to do so.

David Brown owns 34 Holland Street in Bangor and hoped to rent it out, but a fire 11 years ago made it uninhabitable.  His sister, Judy Judkins says that as a Vietnam veteran, Brown has struggled with serious illnesses that have prevented him from fixing up the home and paying his taxes.  Judkins learned of this issue for the first time last week, and says now that she will act as a property manager to help him reconstruct the building.

"He wants to rent it out for a stream of income in his old age," Judkins said. "He couldn't hold a regular job and get a retirement program 401K like everyone else because of his PTSD problems."

Former Newburgh treasurer pleads guilty

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Today's court hearing ends at least one long and bitter chapter in the town of Newburgh's history.

Cindy Dunton admitted to town leaders last year that she took the money from town coffers.  Today she pleaded guilty to a charge of felony theft.  A handful of Newburgh residents filled the courtroom as Dunton entered her plea today.

More than a year ago, a group of Newburgh residents uncovered the irregularities in the budget that led to Dunton's arrest and guilty plea today.  Residents say it doesn't matter that she plead guilty - they just want to know where the money went and how she plans on returning it.

"I haven't taken things from other people.  I could. I'm in that position, but that's not the right way," Cindy Prescott, a Newburgh resident, said. "I mean I understand things are getting tough.  I understand whole-heartedly."

Bradford family safe after fire sparks in basement

BRADFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A family of eight is safe after firefighters from seven different departments battled a basement fire in their Bradford home.

It happened at 689 Main Road. Fire officials got the call just before 11 a.m.

Bradford Fire Chief Scott DeMoranville says one of the family members at home at the time of the fire is a lieutenant with his department. According to DeMoranville, the lieutenant used his fire knowledge to get himself, family members and pets out of the home safely.

"They saw a haze of smoke in the living room," said the chief. "When they began investigating further to see where it was coming from, after he felt the basement door, he opened it and black smoke rolled out. He closed the door up and called 911."

The fire marshal is expected to determine the cause of the fire.

Old Town woman charged with assaulting officer

BANGOR, Maine (AP) -- Bangor police say a 29-year-old woman faces charges after she became combative while being arrested for allegedly trying to steal a shopping cart load of items from a Sears store.

Police say Melissa Lacasse of Old Town was confronted by two police officers at the Bangor Mall late Saturday afternoon after it was reported she allegedly left the store without paying for items valued at $863.

When officers tried to place the woman under arrest, she allegedly assaulted one of the officers and spit on a security officer.

Lacasse was charged with theft, assault, and assault on a police officer, as well as trafficking in prison contraband after officials allegedly found prescription drugs on her.

Nobody required medical attention. Lacasse remained in jail Monday morning.
