Snow means spring hasn't sprung

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- On this first official day of spring, the last thing most people want to think about is shoveling more snow.  But that's exactly what Mainers are dealing with tonight.

If you're one of those people who still need a shovel to remove this snow, you may be out of luck.  Aubuchon Hardware's store manager says that retailers have been gearing up for spring for weeks.  Whatever supplies stores have left over from this winter is all they've got.

Deron Whittemore works at Aubuchon Hardware and says that most stores don't order after the beginning of March.  Flower bulbs, fertilizers, and grills are on display in most hardware stores now, so stores are just waiting out this storm so people can get planting and grilling.

Hampden Town Council sends plan to citizens

HAMPDEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Hampden Town Council is taking one step closer to resolving its issue with the 2010 Comprehensive Plan.

After finding out the town's plan is not a legally enforceable document, the council voted 5-1 to submit the plan to a citizens level committee for consideration before taking any further action.

All residents who spoke at tonight's town council meeting are still enthusiastically against the current draft of the plan.

"We continue on with the plan we already have in place, which is the 2001 Comprehensive Plan," Ed Armstrong, Hampden resident, said. "It's very, very strict.  Why anyone would want to make it even more strict, I just don't understand."

A mother and daughter fight a rare brain disease

OLD TOWN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A seven year old girl in old town is struggling to live with a challenging brain disease.

When Kaymi Hunt was four years old her mother noticed something was wrong with her health. Her condition got worse last summer, that's when doctors in Boston diagnosed her with a rare autoimmune disease of the brain called Hashimoto Encephalopathy.

Less than 200 people have ever been diagnosed with the disease. The disease is so rare doctors didn't have a diagnosis for it until the 1960's. Symptoms include reduced motor skills and memory loss.

If the diagnosis wasn't enough, her mother is in danger of having their home foreclosed on by the bank. Kaymi is receiving steroid treatments from doctors in Boston.

Tamara hunt says Mainecare is covering medical expenses but she is looking for donations to help her make house payments and for other living expenses.
