Vacationers flock to Bangor for travel expo

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Snow is still covering parts of the region but that hasn't stopped people from making plans for the summer season.

Companies and businesses that thrive on tourism took part in the first ever Maine Travel and Adventure Expo. More than 40 vendors from throughout the northeast took part, including a few from parts of Canada. While many were looking to entice travelers to far off locations, others wanted to convince them to vacation right here in Maine.

Business leaders from Downeast Maine say many tourists vacationed there last year. They say several visitors came from overseas looking to take advantage of the beauty that coastal Maine has to offer.

"Of course Acadia National Park," said Micki Sumpter, who is executive director for the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce, "so when you have something like that, they come for that."

Brewer custodians may be out of a job in June

BREWER, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The school committee in Brewer voted unanimously to contract a cleaning service for its new school, which means six custodians are out of a job at the end of the school year.

A new Pre-K through 8th grade school called Brewer Community School (BCS) is opening this fall and will replace five school buildings in Brewer.  BCS would cost around $405,000 to clean, just over $125,000 more than this year's cleaning costs.  This means Superintendent Dan Lee had to find other ways to clean the schools.  Service Master is a commercial cleaning company that would only cost Brewer $305,000, meaning six custodians in the Brewer school system will be replaced.

Deliberations expected in Goodrich trial

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- The trial of a man from Newport accused of fatally shooting his father and beating his mother is expected to go to a jury on Tuesday.

Attornies for Perley Goodrich Jr. called what will likely be their last witnesses on Monday afternoon. They claim their client's long history of mental illness played a huge role in the attack on his parents. Authorities say Goodrich pistol-whipped his mother Sandra Goodrich and fatally shot his father Perley Goodrich Sr. inside their Rutland Road home on the night of October 26, 2009.

On Monday the defense pointed to a key factor that they say could have helped Goodrich get the help he needed. He was discharged from the Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center in Bangor on the same day of the attack after being transferred there from Sebasticook Valley Hospital.
