EMMC Union nurses ratify 1 year contract agreement

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Union nurses have voted to ratify a contract with hospital management at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

The vote was held late Tuesday night.

The Maine State Nurses Association says it was one of their closest votes in history.

The Union's bargaining team reached the one year contract agreement with the hospital late last week after eight and a half months of negotiations.

Nurses have been working without a contract since September.

Now, EMMC's Board of Directors must vote in favor of the contract before it can go into effect. That vote will be held later today.

If it's not approved, both parties will go back to the bargaining table.

Bangor voters head to the polls Wednesday

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)--Voters in Bangor will decide Wednesday if the city should build a new $65,000,000.00 arena to replace the aging Bangor Auditorium and Civic Center.

It's an issue that has drawn heated debate from supporters who say it's an investment the city must make, to opponents who say it's too expensive.

If you build it they will come. Supporters of a new arena say it will draw in bigger and better acts, more conventions, and more money.

Gas prices, bike sales increasing

ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- With gas prices approaching $4/gallon, two-wheels can go a long way.

Some Mainers are leaving their cars in park and hoping on bicycles to get around. Nancy Grant of the Maine Bicycle Coalition said when gas prices go up, people tend to buy more bikes -- and when they go up significantly twice in three years people tend to change their behavior.

She said choosing to ride a bike to work or to run errands around town can save you some serious cash and get you in shape.

?In the state of Maine we have an obesity problem," said Grant. "Obesity then causes all other kinds of health problems, which are really expensive in this state. In our mind, riding a bike around is a great way to be active, to be healthier and reduce your health costs."

Bangor spring clean up changes

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- If you're doing some spring cleaning in your yard, there's a few changes for debris pick up in Bangor you need to be aware of.

Monday, crews began picking up metal pieces on curbs like stoves, washing machines and dryers.

Mon., May 9, for those living west of the Kenduskeag Stream, brush will be picked up starting at 6 a.m. For those living on the east side of the Kenduskeag Stream, brush will be picked up a week later on Mon., May 15, also starting at 6 a.m.

In years past, public works took large items like couches, but they won't be doing that this year because of budget cuts.

"Opening the compound for four weekends in May resulted in over 500 hours of overtime," said Public Works Director Dana Wardwell. "We had to rent dumpsters, we had to hire a private contractor to haul it to the landfill."

Four hundred and thirty guests walked the Hollywood Walk of Fame at the 18th Annual Camden National Bank Chefs’ Gala, as over $50,000 in net proceeds will go to the Breast Clinic and Mammogram Scholarships at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital.

This popular event sponsored by Camden National Bank in partnership with WLBZ2 was sold out by the end of March even with the additional space made possible by Ray Builders and EBS.  Ray Builders constructed and EBS donated the materials for a portable kitchen to make room for additional guests and provide the Chefs, led by Chip Butterwick, a comfortable working environment to prepare their delectable dishes.

Crystal Limousine owner John Partridge donated the use of two limos so guests arrived in style to walk the red carpet.  Atlantic Landscape provided decorations so realistic that guests felt they had been transported to Hollywood

With beautiful weather outside I couldn't stay inside on my day off. Where to go? I don't mind playing the part of tourist and enjoying what the great state of Maine has to offer. You have to visit Acadia National Park at least once in your life. I think its a great option if you are looking for a fun day trip. More pictures at my blog of my day outside.
