UMaine announces $5 million New Balance gift

ORONO -- A $5 million gift from New Balance will help fund a series of UMaine programs and initiatives, all of which have a significant impact on the university's service to its students and the greater community.

The gift includes $2 million that will be used as a challenge grant to fund renovations to its field house, an iconic structure that has served for generations as a focal point of athletic activity involving Black Bear varsity athletes, UMaine students, university faculty and staff members, high school student-athletes, summer sports camp participants and members of the community.?

The challenge grant will be matched by a $2 million capital campaign to raise money for the field house and by approximately $1 million in previously approved state funding for hazardous materials remediation and improved ADA accessibility.?The project is targeted to begi

Burlington man stands trial for double homicide

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- The trial of a Penobscot County man accused of killing two people got underway in Bangor Monday morning.

Nathaneal Nightingale of Burlington is facing two counts of murder for the deaths of Michael Miller and his wife Valerie. The Millers were found shot to death inside their home in Webster Plantation in November of 2009.

Authorities say Nightingale pulled the trigger because he owed Mr. Miller money and was looking to get out of debt. Prosecutors say DNA evidence ties Nightingale to the murder weapon. In addition they say he confessed to police.

The defense claims that confession was coerced after a 'deceptive' interrogation by authorities. The defense also says Michael Miller was a loan shark who had many customers who could have wanted him dead. They say that includes Millers' son Matt Miller, who also was in debt to his father.

Fire It Up! Ribs, smashed potatoes and sauteed spinach

OLD TOWN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- It's difficult to look forward to summer and outdoor cooking when the weather has been so terrible, but that's not bringing the Old Town Fire Department down. Lt. Mike Hildreth and his helpers cook up ribs, smashed potatoes and sauteed spinach.

Ingredients:

2 full racks of ribs

Rib Rub:

2 Tbsp of each of the following spices:

black pepper

paprika

salt

brown sugar

celery salt

Rib Mop Sauce:

4 Tbsp dry mustard

3 c cider vinegar

3 Tbsp salt

Garlic Mashed Potatoes:

2 bags of potatoes

5 cloves of roasted garlic

2 sticks of butter

1/2 gallon skim milk

Sauteed Spinach:

fresh spinach

4 cloves of roasted garlic

olive oil

salt

pepper

Students help clean up Camp Capella

DEDHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Students are helping a local camp get cleaned up before its summer campers arrive.

Students from Brewer High School were painting, fixing things, and cleaning every inch of Camp Capella today. Their involvement is part of the statewide youth philanthropy program, Jumpstart Our Youth (JOY). JOY is a non-profit that makes students do hands-on work to make their surrounding communities better.

"We obviously couldn't do what we do here in the classroom, so it's just great to help out physically, as well as, you know, just being there and saying, 'hey, we support you,'" Amanda Hill, a student at Brewer High School, said.

Homemade Vegetable Soup Dinner at Frankfort Elementary School

The fifth grade students, who are also the Civil Rights Team members, at Frankfort Elementary School, are hosting a community dinner on Monday, June 6, 2011. Supper will consist of homemade vegetable soup, rolls, crackers, punch and assorted cookies for dessert. Supper is being held at the Frankfort Elementary School gym, which is located at 112 Searsport Road, Frankfort, Maine, from 5-6:30PM. The price of the dinner is $2.00 for children and $3.00 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at the Frankfort Elementary School or the Stockton Springs Elementary School offices ahead of time or can be bought at the door. All proceeds for the evening are being donated to the Bangor Humane Society.

Additionally, the fifth grade students will be holding a used book sale during the evening, to help cover the costs of their overnight trip to Camp Tanglewood last month.
