Holden teacher retires after 43 years of teaching

HOLDEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Staff and students at Holden Elementary School honored one of its teachers on Tuesday who is retiring after 43 years of service.

For most of her career, Joy Knowles has been teaching second grade at the school. She started teaching at Holden Elementary in 1968. Many of her former students got to share their thoughts on Knowles at a special assembly and some were even bussed over from Holbrook Middle School so they could attend.

Knowles said she felt surprised and overwhelmed by the school's response.

"I can tell you that I have never once regretted doing this job," she said, "I have enjoyed every single day of my teaching career."

The school also dedicated a weeping cherry tree at the conclusion of Tuesday's ceremony. It will stand outside the school to honor all teachers who retire from Holden Elementary.

Students help veterans share their stories

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A group of students from hampden are helping area veterans share their stories with the world.

A group of Hampden Academy students interviewed local veterans about their service during World War II and the Korean War.

The interviews were filmed and will be put on DVD as well as the internet for the Library of Congress.

Hampden Academy Senior Jenn Fortin is one of the interviewers. She says she's excited to help share the veterans stories.

"There's definitely a different side of the war that you get to see from the veterans point of view that I think is really missed in history classes in schools," said Fortin. "Just the more gruesome things and the real things that go on in battles."

Fairmont School Students Spray Paint the Streets

Bangor, ME— 4th and 5th graders at Fairmont School in Bangor are partnering with the Penobscot County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Bangor Area Storm Water Group (BASWG) and the City of Bangor to spray paint a important message on the streets of Bangor.

The students will visit the neighborhoods around the school in Bangor on June 15, 2011 to stencil, REDUCE YOUR USE OF LAWN CHEMICALS, DRAINS TO STREAM on pavement near storm drains to remind residents that stormwater flows unfiltered to Kenduskeag Stream.  The stencil also depicts a Rubber Ducky, which has become the symbol of stormwater pollution since the original “Ducky Ad” aired on television in 2005. This year a new advertisement featuring the red duck promoted safer lawn care, by encouraging Mainer’s to cut back on lawn chemicals, mow higher and leave grass clippings.

Police: Second abduction attempt a hoax

HERMON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Penobscot County Sheriff's Department says a second report of an attempted child abduction in Hermon was a hoax.

Sheriffs deputies say a boy told authorities a man in a white car with red stripes tried to kidnap him at the intersection of Route 2 and Billings road in Hermon Friday afternoon.

That description is the exact same one given by a girl who police say was nearly abducted a week earlier on Cold Brook Road.

Police determined that report to be credible, but after investigating the boys story, it didn't take them long to determine that his story was fake.

Deputy Mike Burgess said investigators who checked out the boys story found out that a surveillance camera at a store that was right next to the area of the alleged incident had recorded the area.
